# HW202: Motherboard Deep Dive on Chipsets and Firmware

## Course Overview

HW202 covers the physical, electrical, and logical hub of the computer: the motherboard. You will learn to navigate the board layout, identify the appropriate headers for case connectivity, configure firmware settings (BIOS/UEFI), analyze chipset lane-sharing limitations, and methodically troubleshoot no-boot and no-POST failures.

## Course Outline

### Module 1: Motherboard Big Picture

Understand the motherboard as the map of the computer.

* **1.1 The motherboard as a city map**: Use a city map analogy to understand traces, sockets, DIMM slots, expansion lanes, and power delivery.
* **1.2 Quick Check: Motherboard map**: 3-question check on the function of the board, socket compatibility limits, and layout spacing considerations.

### Module 2: Ports, Headers, and Slots

Split external ports, internal headers, and expansion slots into simple groups.

* **2.1 Where everything plugs in**: Learn what USB headers, fan connectors, front-panel pins, SATA ports, M.2 slots, and PCIe expansions do.
* **2.2 Practice: Match a case to a board**: Autograded assignment requiring you to identify matching motherboard front-panel pins, USB-C headers, and fan ports for a specific PC case design.

### Module 3: Firmware and Startup

Learn what happens before the operating system loads.

* **3.1 Firmware is the startup rulebook**: Explain BIOS or UEFI, POST (Power-On Self-Test), boot order, and firmware settings.
